Struggles in opener
Valencia recorded one shot (zero on goal) in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Cote D'ivoire.
Analysis: Valencia had a difficult match against Cote d'Ivoire, far from the level he showed in the 2022 World Cup. He had one notable moment, hitting the post from close range on the left side of the goal, but was otherwise unable to get involved, registering just 20 touches in his 77 minutes on the pitch. In a nearly even possession match, Valencia left little imprint on the game, though if he starts their next fixture against Curacao, who conceded seven goals to Germany in their World Cup debut, it will present a more favorable opportunity.
Plays 45 minutes in practice game
Valencia (calf) has recovered from injury and was tested for 45 minutes in a practice match and could be available to start, according to Estadio EC.
Analysis: Valencia had been training separately after picking up a calf injury in Liga MX, but he has made significant strides in his recovery and was put through a 45-minute run-out in a practice match against a second-division side, where he performed at a high level. Reports suggest he trained well and is ready to start. His participation at this tournament will also make him only the second Ecuadorian in history to appear at three World Cups.
