Four shots versus Cape Verde

Torres generated four shots (one on goal), four crosses (zero accurate) and one chance created in Monday's 0-0 draw versus Cape Verde.

Analysis: Torres started Spain's World Cup opener, occupying the right side of the three-headed attack. He, like the rest of his teammates, was frustrated by Cape Verde's impressive low block, though had the best of Spain's chances in the match. He hit the crossbar in the 41st minute and then had a great opportunity to score four minutes later but failed to strike with enough conviction. He was ultimately replaced by Dani Olmo in the 81st minute, finishing with four shots and four crosses. With Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal both making their returns to the pitch Monday, Spain's starting front three will likely look different moving forward. The decision will ultimately boil down to Torres versus Mikel Oyarzabal in the middle, though it's too early to tell who will get the nod Sunday versus Saudi Arabia.

Supersub role for Spain

Torres has been named in Spain's World Cup squad and is expected to play a key rotational role off the bench throughout the competition, providing manager De la Fuente with a direct and experienced option to change the course of games.

Analysis: Torres ended the season with Barcelona having contributed 16 goals and two assists in 33 La Liga appearances in a regular starter role at club level, continuing to demonstrate his quality as a reliable and dangerous wide forward. The Spaniard brings pace, directness and a clinical instinct in front of goal that makes him a dangerous impact option from the bench, and his ability to operate across the front line gives manager De la Fuente tactical flexibility in the later stages of matches. Torres heads into the World Cup motivated to make the most of every opportunity that comes his way and prove he can be a match-winner for Spain at the tournament.
